Description
In the summer of 1989 the National and Local Government Officers Association (NALGO) launched strike action calling for a 12% national pay rise. In the first week members went on strike for one day, the second week for two days and so on. Rubbish was left uncollected and poll tax payments left unprocessed. The stink of rubbish in the hot summer months put public pressure on the government. The strike was successful and cities like Nottingham were guaranteed pay negotiation.

This banner and would have been used in 1989 strike. The images from left to right show Nottingham Town Hall, the city’s coat of arms, Robin Hood and the Lace Market in Nottingham.

NALGO was founded in 1905, and eventually became one of the largest unions in the country. In 1993 it merged with two other public sector unions to form UNISON, which is now one of the UK’s largest trade unions with 1.3 million members.
