Description
John Bright was born in Rochdale on 16 November 1811 and joined his father's successful cotton manufacturing firm. He was elected to represent Durham in 1843 and was influential in the Anti-Corn Law League, which in 1846 abolished the laws that had kept the price of bread artificially high. Bright became a national hero and later represented Birmingham in Parliament. He spoke out against American slavery and against involvement in wars. He was President of the Board of Trade in the Liberal government of 1868 and died on 27 March 1889.
J. C. Edwards of Ruabon made this tile. The firm was in business between 1870 and 1958.
