Description
Medal commemorating the Peterloo Massacre, August 16, 1819.
Important events were often commemorated through the production of memorabilia such as handkerchiefs, ceramic jugs, and medals. These also served to show the owenr's support for causes such as anti-slavery or reform. There were a number of commemorative medals produced following the Peterloo massacre, but this seems to be the only surviving example of its kind. The medal includes a more hostile and angry slogan than other examples. It is thought to have been produced to raise funds for the victims of the massacre, though this is unconfirmed.
Obverse:
An engraving shows the Yeomanry charging into the crowd at Peterloo with sabres drawn; men, women and childred are on the ground at the forefront. One man stands holding a flag with the pole topped with the cap of liberty.
Reverse:
First inscription circles the edge, reading "The Wicked Have Drawn Out The Sword". The lettering is faded, especially to the left of the medal. In the centre reads another inscription "They Have Cut Down The Poor And Needy And Such As Be Of Upright Conversation"
