Emmanuel Shinwell (1884-1986), known as Manny Shinwell, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, served in Clement Attlee's 1945 Labour Government as Minister of Fuel & Power, and in that role presided over the nationalisation of Britain's coal mines in 1947.
