Description
Friendly Society Memorabilia collected by Peter Gosden of the University of Leeds. Gosden was the author of 'The Friendly Societies in England, 1815-1875' (Manchester University Press, 1961) and 'Self Help- Voluntary Associations in Nineteenth Century Britain' (Studies in Economic and Socieal History, 1973). The collection was presented to the museum in March 2016.

Same corporate image and inconography as used on t he Dunns Shoemakers Reform Banner on display; crown of Saint/King Crispin, leather worker's knife and the 2 supporters of the 'men's men' on the left and the 'ladies' men' on the right. The former made men's shoes and boots and the latter made women's shoes. See for example, Nick Mansfield, 'John Brown, as hoemaker in Place's London', History Workshop Journal, c.1979.
