Description
A red and gold banner made of hexagonal patches with small embroidered designs, with gold lettering saying 'Nothing About Us Without Us'.
People's History Museum commissioned this banner in 2015 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act. Textile artists from Venture Arts designed and created hundreds of these patches and sent them to disabled artists and participants from across the UK and Ireland, with help from the Can Do Manchester project (Leonard Cheshire Disability). Each participant was asked to stitch their name or something about themselves onto their patch, which were then returned to Venture Arts and stitched together.
The red and gold colouring represents courage and ambition, and the slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us" has commonly been used by disability activists since the 1990s to communicate the idea that no decision should be made about disabled people without the involvement of disabled people.
