Description
Poster depicting a nuclear explosion, around 1960. The top half of the poster is a bright blue sky with a yellow sun whilst the bottom half is a dark blue with a red explosive spot. The colours in between are a gradient. In the middle of the poster there is a square upon which a map is drawn on with a mushroom cloud explosion starting on the surface of the map and projecting outwards towards the sun. Black text next to the image reads 'Clear skies or N U Clear skies'. At the bottom white text on a black background reads 'Your choice!'. This poster was made at some point during the Cold War, a period of geopolitical tension between the USA and the Soviet Union which also spread to allied states- known as the Eastern bloc (also known as the Communist/socialist/Soviet bloc) and the Western bloc (also known as the Free/capitalist/American bloc). The Cold War era began in the latter half of the 1940's and lasted
until the late 1980's/early 1990's. During this time, missiles were being developed by both sides that could be used to launch nuclear attacks. This was met with a lot of resistance as the effects of nuclear war would be deadly; the Communist Party and other organisations in what came to be seen as the Peace Movement often campaigned for the UK to take a stand against the development and deployment of nuclear weapons within its borders and more generally. Condition: fair, some slight creases around the edges, there is a small hole in the centre of the poster
