Description
A red banner with a hammer and sickle in the central panel above a factory. The central panel is surrounded by oak leaves, thistles and daffodills. Above it is the text 'Workers of the World Unite'. At the bottom of the banner on a ribbon is 'Central Committee Communist Party of Great Britain'.
This banner dates from between 1920, the year that the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) was founded, and 1943 when the Central Committee changed name to the Executive Committee, an attempt to anglicise the party's Russian sounding structure. It was carried at special occassions, including the funeral of General Secretary Harry Pollitt in 1960. It was decorated with the Scottish thistle, Welsh daffodil and oak leaves to represent England, which were probably regarded as more symbolic of working people than the traditional English rose.
