Title
For the good of your own
Description
A poster made by the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) encouraging people to join. The TGWU was once the largest trade union in the world and remains one of the largest unions in the UK after merging with Amicus to become Unite the Union in 2007. The poster features detail from the International Workers Mural, painted in 1976 to mark the opening of the Eastbourne Centre, the purpose-built conference centre of the TGWU. The mural was painted by Michael [Mick] Jones, Christopher Robinson and Simon Barber of the Art Workers Co-operative and is meant to symbolise the struggles that trade unions have overcome in the past. The section of the mural detailed on this poster shows five smiling adults and a child with arms outstretched. One of the adults is holding a pint of beer. At the
top of the poster there is a black and white photograph of workers, both in suits and casual dress, underneath which 'for the good of your own' is written in black text inside a yellow ribbon. Black text at the bottom of the poster reads 'Transport and General Workers Union'. The poster was designed by Windhorse and printed by Macdermott and Chant. Condition: There are tape marks on the corners of the poster. A small strip of tape remains attached to the upper left side. The back has marks from where blue tack has been used. The poster is slightly yellowed in appearance.
