Description
This poster was published by the National Union of Algerian Youth. Probably made in 1960s, as 1962 was the year of Algerian Independence after the war, opposing French occupation. The top of the poster has writing, most likely in Arabic or Standard Algerian Berber. The bottom of the poster has a statement in French which is most likely a translation of the top statement in Arabic - this says 'anti-imperialist solidarity, peace, friendship.' This is a translation from Google translate from French to English so may be inaccurate. Bottom left of the poster has more Arabic writing, the number 24 and an address located in Algeria. The bottom right has a symbol and says the name of the publisher in French. The translation of this is the 'National Union of Algerian Youth.' The background of the poster is blue, with a sketch of a globe in the background suggesting solidarity. The centre of the poster has two large pictures of a dove, and a hand facing outwards holding two fingers up - both of these are symbols of peace. This poster is clearly anti-imperialsm and French occupation of Algeria. French Colonisation in Algeria started in 1830 and ended in 1962. Many of the citizens did not have political autonomy, and many of the indigenous musllims were persecuted. There were many protests opposing the french, and the Algerian War or Algerian war of independence stopped French occupation. The people were protesting the imperial presence and crimes against humanity used by the French. Many Algerian people were murdered by the French, some calling it a genocide. The National Liberation Front were anti-colonial, islamic and used both Marxist and Socialist ideologies. The National Union of Algerian Youth, who created this poster, were most likely linked to the National Liberation Front. The poster's condition is good - some creases and white marks. Possibly deterioration due to time/poor storage.
