The GLC (Greater London Council) was a local government branch for the London area that ran between 1965 to 1986. It was abolished by Margaret Thatcher and its powers devolved into several local borough councils. Prior to its abolition, the GLC, lead by Labour politician Ken Livingstone, implemented a number of socialist policies and aimed to implement more. Some of its ambitions included a reduced tube fare for Londoners and a solution to the unemployment crisis. Many feel that Thatcher's decision to devolve the powers of the GLC was politically motivated, as the GLC presented the biggest challenge to Conservative leadership in the London area.
