Description
This Labour Party poster from the 1922 General Election exploits the phrase used at the end of World War One by the Liberal Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. Made thirteen days after peace was declared on the 11th of November (Armistice day) 1918, the stated objective in full was actually: "What is our task ? To make Britain a fit country for heroes to live in" .
Lloyd George's vision was not to be realised. Severe industrial unrest marked Britain in the years after World War One, and by 1922 economic slump had set in, bringing mass unemployment. British farming was stimulated by the Great War, but peace soon meant the resumption of cheaper agricultural imports for Britain's cities and towns. Farm work drastically declined.
Between the wars, most agricultural equipment was still horse-drawn.
