The Labour Party's 1950 election campaign materials focused on successful policies the Clement Attlee Labour government had introduced since 1945, particularly welfare state policies. Family allowances, now called child benefit, were introduced in 1946 by the Labour government. It is a weekly payment that was originally paid for every child in a family. They were paid to every family with children regardless of income. This poster features three children from the Winters family, friends of Labour Weekly editor, George Bax.
Child benefit has been changed in recent years, restricting who can receive it and how many children a family can have that are eligible for child benefit payments. Originally it was conceived of as a universal payment no matter how many children a family had, or how rich or poor the family was.
