Description
This is a postcard with a photograph printed onto it. This image shows a young South Asian girl holding a white doll with blue eyes. This is a photograph by Afza Nudrat. Born 1955 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Nudrat Afza is a self-taught social-documentary photographer who lives and works in Bradford. For over 30 years, Nudrat has been documenting the everyday lives of people from diverse communities. On the reverse of the postcard there is an address, and the title of the photograph, labelled "Black girl with white doll." Afza used the term Black when referring to South Asians - this is rooted in the concept of "political blackness" where black was used to describe anyone who was not white. This was used a lot in the 1970s and 1980s, but the term is contested due to generalisations and other issues.
