Political Pride Manchester was set up in August 2015 as an alternative to the Pride event set up by Manchester Pride following an open meeting by the LGBT Centre in Manchester to gauge the needs of the LGBTQIA community in Manchester. Political Pride had around 40 core volunteers representing different activist groups around the city, and activities were hosted at the Sidney Street LGBT cafe as well as the Manchester Metropolitan University campus. The idea behind Political Pride was to take Pride back to its roots as a protest, using it as a tool for collective organising to further the rights of LGBTQIA people. Central to the idea of Political Pride was providng an alternative space to the club and pub scene of the Gay Village in order to attract a wider representation of the LGBTQIA population and emphasise that Pride is about more than partying.
