âBuddiesâ systems paired volunteers with people living with HIV/AIDS to help them with medications, other practicalities and emotional support. In the UK, the HIV/AIDS charity the Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) created its own Buddies system in 1998 in response to developments in medications meaning HIV+ people had to take up to 30 pills a day at carefully monitored times, having a significant impact on peopleâs social lives. The THT Buddies worked to peopleâs schedules to combat social isolation.
