The phrase "out of the closet" refers to LGBTQIA coming out, or sharing their identity with others. To come out was the rallying cry of openly gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk in his now famous speech on 25 June 1978. He urged people to come out to help break down harmful myths about LGBTQIA people, so features on badges from this time.
