Description
A grey leaflet showing water going down a plug hole. The text reads 'Mrs May's plan for Brexit. Jeremy Corbyn's plan for the country'.
This flier was created by the UK Independence Party (UKIP) during the 2017 General Election campaign. Then Conservative Party Prime Minister Theresa May was viewed as being opposed to a 'hard' Brexit where the UK would completely abandon any cooperation with the EU, which was UKIP's preferred outcome. Then Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was viewed as too pro-EU, and too left wing, and politicians on the right, like UKIP, predicted that his social and economic policies would be bad for the UK. This leaflet implies that if Theresa May remained Prime Minister, she would abandon leaving the EU and if Jeremy Corbyn became Prime Minister then he would destroy the country.
UKIP is a right wing Eurosceptic political party promoting British nationalism and isolationism. UKIP was founded in 1993, and was one of the first parties to call for Britain to leave the European Union, which ultimately happened following the 2016 referendum where Britain narrowly voted to leave the EU. Their political platform targets the white working class with a focus on restricting immigration, and treating the existence of Muslims in the UK as a problem threatening British society. Their social policies are also against LGBTQIA+ rights, pro capital punishment, and against human rights legislation. UKIP is opposed by anti-fascist groups, and much of the political and media spectrum in the UK as their policies and statements on immigration and cultural identity are racist and xenophobic.
