Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF)
Description
A black banner with a rainbow on the background, and white writing above that. The ASLEF logo of two people working on a train above a black hand shaking a white hand is in the top left corner and the union name on the top right. 'Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Members fighting prejudice, fighting intolerance' is written in the bottom half of the banner.
This was the first banner that ASLEF created for LGBT members, and was made around the early 2000s. The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) is the train drivers' union. Unions support all their members, but workers like LGBTQIA+ people, disabled people, or People of Colour who are at risk of experiencing discrimination on top of standard workplace issues, may need additional support. To enable this, many unions, including ASLEF have an LGBT Committee. These committees represent the interests of LGBTQIA+ people in the union, for instance supporting workers who are experiencing discrimination due to their sexuality or gender identity, or workers who might want their colleagues to be offered some guidance on how to support them if they come out at work. The banner features rainbow colours, which are commonly used in LGBTQIA+ art.
