Description
A metal badge shaped like a loop of white ribbon, with gold edging. It is on a card which has a drawing of the same ribbon shape, and the writing: 'White Ribbon Campaign.co.uk. End male violence to women. By wearing this badge I pledge never to condone or remain silent about violence against women'.
The White Ribbon Campaign is a UK charity aiming to 'prevent violence against women and girls by addressing the root causes of menâs violence against women: harmful attitudes, behaviours and systems around rigid gender norms and harmful expressions of masculinity that perpetuate gender inequality and gender-based violence'. The badge comes with a pledge for the wearer to intervene and challenge sexism and the normalisation of violence against women.
The white ribbon movement began in Canada in 1990, and is focused around the importance of male allyship to end violence against women and girls. Gender based violence is an endemic issue in many societies, including the UK where in 2024 the National Police Chief's Council estimated that 2 million or 1 in 12 women a year are victims of male violence including stalking, harassment, domestic violence and sexual violence. The same research warned that many young men and boys are radicalized by sexist online influencers like Andrew Tate. The white ribbon movement argues that all men can play a role in preventing violence against women by understanding and challenging harmful, sexist attitudes and behaviours that lead some men and boys to treating women and girls badly and ultimately violently.
