Description
Special edition of The Pacifist newsletter, titled "militarism: the issue today". It is volume 21 from May 1983. The front cover is a collage of photographs and illustrations, including a young child appearing to hold a rifle, a sitting person holding a placard in front of a row of policemen, and a mushroom cloud. The back cover advertises some books and pamphlets available through the Peace Pledge Union.

Founded in 1934, the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) promotes pacifism and nonviolence, educates on conscientious objection, and challenge everyday normalisation and veneration of the military. PPU distribute the white poppy each year in the run-up to Remembrance Day, as a symbol of remembrance of all victims of war, a challenge of militarism, and a commitment to peace. The poppies were first made in 1933 by the Co-operative Women's Guild, many of whom had lost family and friends in the First World War.
