Description
One of a set of 10 posters titled "The Socially Useful Show" with collages by Peter Kennard. This one is titled "Work to be done" with a photographic collage of houses and a small child. Statistics about the number of house built and people on housing waiting lists criss-cross the page in an X shape.
In 1974, Lucas Aerospace began cutting jobs as military contracts declined and jobs were offshored. Workers organised themselves into a Combine, developing socially useful products including cutting edge green technologies and dialysis machines. However, these plans were never implemented despite union and Labour pressure on company management. Many workers left to establish the Centre for Alternative Industrial Technologies (CAIT). The Socially Useful Show posters were created to educate others about the Lucas Plan workers.
