Description
The Local Defence Volunteers, later renamed Home Guard, were recruited to resist German invasion of Britain in World War II (1939-1945). Later they would popularly be referred to as Dad's Army. The volunteers were not paid and, in the early days of 1940, few were equipped with rifles, and one gun had to serve ten men on average. By 1942 the Home Guard was being taken more seriously, being better organized, drilled, and trained in methods of physical combat; and supply of rifles was more adequate.

This Home Guard certificate of proficiency is dated 11th April 1944 and it states that lieutenant corporal A. Bromley from Lancashire has duly passed the Proficiency tests. The subjects he qualified in were Sten Gun use, Map Reading, and General Knowledge.
