Description
This AB64 soldier's service and pay book was issued to Arthur Sandford of Blackburn, Lancashire, who was a weaver by trade. It records that he enlisted with the East Lancashire Regiment in 1931 and documents also his service as a regular soldier during World War II (1939-1945). It records his
next-of-kin, marriage details, and the items of uniform issued to him.
The Army Book 64 was the British soldier's identity document and had to be carried at all times during World War II. The soldier was allowed to keep the book after discharge. In the case of those killed-in-action, the book, where possible, was returned to the next-of-kin. Arthur Sandford survived the war and returned to Blackburn in October 1945.
