Description
Soldiers' release books during World War II (1939-1945) were issued to the soldier when he was demobilised or 'demobbed' from the army following defeat of Germany and Japan by Britain and the Allied forces. Release came late for many, who were keen to get home, some servicemen being demobbed in 1947. The release book recorded amongst other things the military conduct of the soldier and where that was very good "Exemplary Conduct" was often the phrase used.

This release book was duty Serg
eant Arthur Sandford's, whose home was in Preston, Lancashire, and it is stamped "9th October 1945 Military Dispersal Unit Ashton-Under-Lyne." His regiment was the East Lancashire Regiment. His military conduct is stated as" Very Good". The receipt of his army greatcoat is acknowledged on the first page.
