Description
Screenprinted poster advertising Trotskyist rock band The Derelicts - "Watch out for the Derelicts" in red bold text at the top. Below is a 1960s comic-style image of a man and woman, with speech bubbles "Gwen darling you've changed. You're not the same sweet girl you used to be" / "You're right Peter! I feel like a human being at last. It's the end of reactionary crap for me!" A thought bubble from Gwen reads "Thanks Derelicts". Along the bottom is "The Chippenham Shirland Rd W9 Alternate Thursdays - April 29th, May 13th 27th, June 10th 24th, July 8th 22nd - Westbourne Pk [tube station] Bus No. 6, 28 + 31. Adm [admittance] 30p."
This poster was made by Paddington Printshop, a community graphic design and print workshop in West London, co-founded by John Phillips and Pippa Smith. Between 1975-1991, the centre printed over 400 designs for left-wing community organisations. These publicised local political campaigns such as housing rights and food co-ops, to social gatherings including play days, gardening clubs, gigs and festivals. Their do-it-yourself style was part of the proto-punk ethos.
