Description
This token was produced for the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, established by Granville Sharp and Thomas Clarkson in 1787. It shows the Society's emblem of a chained African slave, naked and kneeling, with "Am I Not A Man And A Brother", while the reverse shows two hands clasped in friendship. Africans were transported by force and sold into slavery on cotton, rice, sugar cane and tobacco plantations in the United States and the Caribbean. The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act became law in1807, although slavery did not end in the British Empire until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.
