Amalgamated Society of Engineers emblem, 1852
The Amalgamated Society of Engineers was formed in 1851 and a year later they commissioned James Sharples to design this emblem. Sharples was a self educated man and the model of Victorian respectability. You can see Sharples' drawing tools and sketches in the case opposite.
