Description
Tutill's silk banners were dyed, woven and hand painted at the company premises at 83 City Road in London. The City Road site was designed specifically for banner-making with three galleries and a glass roof to let in daylight. The painting process was highly skilled with different artists each painting landscapes, emblems, portraits and technical scenes such as buildings or workplaces. Banners made for the Ancient Order of Foresters and other friendly societies featured similar symbols representing hope, justice and the 'all seeing eye' which were common in other artworks produced by the labour movement.
