Description
It was common in the aftermath of World War II for local councils and large businesses, such as the Co-op, to produce 'rolls of honour' commemorating employees who were killed on active military service. Workers who survived were sometimes recorded on the lists. About 265, 000 British servicemen and women were killed in World War II in the international struggle against Fascism. A red star on this modest roll of honour marks the names and rank of those workers who were killed in action. It was made after the war, in 1950, and was perhaps a copy of a more permanent, metal plaque. Fractured gas mains were common during the Blitz, and Nottingham's Gas Department, like those of other cities, were assisted in dealing with them by the city's Fire Service and its wartime, highly competent Auxiliary Fire Service.
