Description
plain wooden truncheon, varnished; is cracked. Leather strapmissing. Was carried by special constable at Peterloo.
Key information on the Peterloo truncheon NMLH.1999.33: Mrs Fowler told us that the truncheon was taken from a special constable at Peterloo by her great-great-great grandfather who then is said by her to have hid in public house, in Factory Lane, corner of Rochdale Road, Barnes Green, (Blakely ?) Manchester (for three days under a bench ?). His name is not known. Truncheon had leather strap but is now missing. Truncheon belonged to her father, Thomas Stone Williams, a Liberal, Lord Mayor of Manchester in the 1930s. Mrs Fowler wrongly states 'Corn Law Rising' on label in object history file, and she confirmed as mistake. 30th November 1999, P. Dunn, Museum Registrar.
OSP script: A man took this truncheon from a constable at Peterloo, in an attempt to fight back. He then hid it in a pub and collected it later.
