Suffrage Atelier banner, about 1910
The London based Suffrage Atelier was founded in 1909 and operated until the outbreak of World War I in 1914. It was established as 'An Arts and Crafts Society Working for the Enfranchisement of Women'. The Atelier encouraged non-professional artists to submit work and paid them a small percentage of any profits made from work sold. The Suffrage Atelier made many of the surviving women's suffrage banners.
2011 is the first year this banner has been displayed at the People's History Museum. It was conserved in our Textile Conservation Studio in 2010.
Materials: Ground of rep with cotton weft and silk warp. Applied work in silk and embroidery in metal and silk threads.
