Description
Yellow, black and red poster. The text reads "£10 Takes You To Good Jobs In Sunny Australia Enquire Here Now."
The Assisted Passage Scheme, in place from 1945-1972, aimed to help labour shortages by offering British subjects the chance to migrate cheaply. At a time of housing shortages and rationing in post war Britain, 400,000 '£10 Poms' applied in the first year alone. However, this opportunity was not afforded to everyone in Britain; the 'White Australia Policy' (1901-1975) forbade people of non-European ethnic origin, especially Asians and Pacific Islanders, from immigrating to Australia. This law worked to uphold the settler colonial state and promote white supremacy in Australia. In 1975 the Whitlam Government passed the Racial Discrimination Act, which made racially-based selection criteria unlawful, although the legacy of the policy continues to affect people today.
