In 1763, the satirist Charles Churchill wrote Epistle to William Hogarth criticising Hogarth’s caricature of John Wilkes. In response, Hogarth published The Bruiser which depicted Churchill as a drunken bear whilst a dog urinated on a copy of the Epistle. This print satirises The Bruiser and the feud with Wilkes, calling it a farce, and depicts Hogarth as an ass.
