Description
A copy of the New Leader newspaper illustrated with a miner and family stood in front of an industrial scene of people working captioned 'locked out and alone'. Dated Friday May 21 1926.

In 1926 the miners rejected pay cuts and were locked out by their employers.

The 1926 General Strike was a solidarity strike by millions of workers around the UK who went on strike in solidarity with striking mine workers who had been locked out of work by their employers for rejecting a simultaneous cut to their pay and demand they work longer hours per shift.

The General Strike lasted for 9 days before it was called off by the TUC on May 12. The mine workers remained on strike until November 1926, by which time most felt they had no economic choice but to return to work even though their terms had not been met. However, some miners refused to accept the increased hours and cut pay so did not return to work at all. The New Leader's illustration, showing society moving on and workers working while the miner stands in defiance may show how the miners felt betrayed and abandoned by the TUC's decision to end the General Strike without the miners demands being met.
