Once a month join this informal creative workshop for some stitching, chatting and sharing, inspired by the museum’s collections.
Create and share textile responses to the topics explored, using techniques taught by artist Helen Mather.
Bring along your own sewing projects to work on while watching and listening, or switch on your camera and microphone to join in the conversation and shape ideas worth fighting for to be explored in future workshops.
Keep an eye on Instagram @phmmcr to see the latest creations, and share yours using #fabricofprotest.
All textile abilities welcome, suitable for ages 11+ (under 18s must have an accompanying adult present during session).
Click the ‘show previous dates’ button to find other Fabric of Protest resources, starting from June 2020.
This month’s inspiration:
Join artist Helen Mather for an exploration of the theme of migration and textiles, inspired by the 2020 Banner Exhibition on display at the museum. Banners we’ll look at this month:
Both of these banners highlight the links between migration and employment, particularly demonstrating the connections between the textile trade and migration in Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries.
On a patch of fabric, have a go at weaving to create symbols of industry, using threads as a way of representing the different people and communities who have contributed to Manchester’s textile industry, making it an international city.
Share your creations with us on social media using #fabricofprotest. We plan to bring together photos of participants’ creations to make a digital patchwork banner.
Part of PHM’s programme exploring migration, co-created by a Community Programme Team made up of people whose lives have been shaped by migration.
