Step into the role of banner makers. Be responsible for creating a striking design and deciding how best to communicate a strong, memorable message.

PHM holds the largest collection of trade union and political banners in the world!

What better place to learn about the power of collective action and the role of visual arts in campaigning.

This workshop was made possible with Art Fund support.

What can you expect from our workshops?

They run a little differently to traditional ways of teaching.

We promote a shared responsibility for learning, which removes the traditional roles of teacher, facilitator and participant so individuals can become self-reliant and creative thinkers.

What does this look like?

  1. Instilling a ‘try three before me’ mantra promotes problem-solving skills and builds a stronger peer support network
  2. Adults focus on connection not correction. We get curious, ask questions, and encourage risk taking rather than providing answers
  3. We prioritise the process, rather than having a finished piece of work at the end of the session.

Everyone has an important part to play:

The facilitator

  • Share and demonstrate skills
  • Set up activities and provide a path of enquiry
  • Celebrate success and failure equally, because we learn a lot through our mistakes.

Teachers and supporting adults

  • Provide encouragement and give 1-2-1 support where necessary
  • Observe and take note of participants personal progression
  • Ask questions instead of giving answers.

Participants

  • Take risks and test ideas, even if they are unsure if it will work
  • Use and provide peer support to complete tasks
  • Have fun!
