Textile Conservator

£22,627 per annum
Contract 35 hours per week. Fixed term contract for 9 months

People’s History Museum (PHM) is looking for a creative, skilled and adaptable early-career Textile Conservator, with a recognised professional qualification in textile conservation, to join its highly regarded Conservation Team.

PHM is the UK’s only museum entirely dedicated to sharing the stories of the revolutionaries, reformers, workers, voters and citizens who championed, then and now, for change and rallied for rights and equality.

We do this by working alongside the communities whose stories the museum tells and through an eclectic and colourful, historic and contemporary collection that features over 450 banners, badges, 2,000 posters, artwork, cartoons, placards, personal items and more, spanning four centuries of ideas worth fighting for.

The Conservation Team cares for the museum’s collections and also provides a service of professional conservation. The team works in the purpose-built and dedicated Textile Conservation Studio (TCS), is led by an accredited member of ICON (Institution of Conservation) and is listed on the Conservation Register.

The Textile Conservator will use their practical conservation skills and training to care for and conserve collections in storage and to prepare them for display to the public as well as supporting external conservation projects that generate income for PHM.

Joining forces with the small team of Conservators, the Textile Conservator’s key focus will be conserving four historic trade union banners.

Please note, this role will involve work at our off-site stores, which are not as accessible as we would like. While every effort will be made to accommodate access requirements, we are unable to make certain changes due to the nature of the building.  If you would like more information, or you would like to discuss any required adjustments with us, please do get in touch with Charlie Corkin, Executive Support Officer, by emailing Charlie.corkin@phm.org.uk
