Collections Assistant

£18,933 per annum
Contract 35 hours per week. Fixed term contract until February 2023

People’s History Museum (PHM) is looking for a new member for its Collection team; a Collections Assistant.

We’re looking for someone who is inquisitive, interested in exploring the untold stories of the past, and is enthusiastic about helping others to learn about these histories.

PHM tells the story of ideas worth fighting for: democracy, equality and campaigns for justice over the last 200 years. Our collection covers topics from protests for the right to vote, to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and issues we’re facing today; such as climate change, Black Lives Matter and Covid-19.

This new role will enable us to discover and share these stories, by helping to catalogue and add to the collection, interpreting objects for digital content, and supporting our programme of events and exhibitions. The Collections Assistant will also support PHM’s Political Posters, an ambitious new project to catalogue and digitise our complete collection of around 6,000 posters.

Through the posters project and our day-to-day work we’re planning on refocusing and expanding our collection to ensure we’re telling the stories of the communities around us.  This includes looking at history through an intersectional lens to see the connections and contributions from LGBT+ history, Black British history, disabled people’s history, and the history of ethnically minoritised communities.

We’re looking for someone who is interested in finding out more about histories that haven’t always been focused on; someone who is methodical, with strong and creative communication skills; someone with a good attention to detail and problem solving skills. You do not need any previous experience for this role, and will be fully trained in collections care and management.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a chat to discuss the role, please contact Charlie Corkin, Executive Support Officer at charlie.corkin@phm.org.uk.

Please note; in addition to work at the museum this role will involve work at our off-site stores, which are not as accessible as we would like. While every effort will be made to accommodate access requirements, we are unable to make certain changes due to the nature of the building where the off-site stores are housed.  If you would like more information, or you would like to discuss any required adjustments with us, please do get in contact.
