Event | WEA Course: Rise Like Lions! A study of Shelley’s poem

In response to the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote The Masque of Anarchy.  This course will study the poem with the famous lines; ‘Rise Like Lions!’ and ‘We Are Many! They Are Few!’

Led by Mark Krantz, WEA tutor and author of Rise Like Lions: The History and Lessons of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, each session will involve a presentation of material followed by an interactive discussion.  This course will look at:

• the Peterloo Massacre of 1819
• the life of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley
• the meaning of the poem The Masque of Anarchy
• a study of the poem in history
• its use and relevance today

This course includes a visit to PHM’s main galleries and Labour History Archive & Study Centre to examine the relevant materials.
