Archive study days - Exclusive opportunity

This hands-on experience uses primary sources from marginalised voices to re-examine key moments in democratic history.

Professional researchers will guide you through a range of materials, share new research and help you interrogate the information presented in the sources.

During your session, we will:

  • Understand what an archive is and how to use one
  • Explore inclusive histories that challenge traditional narratives
  • Analyse the provenance, content and inference of a range of sources – essential research skills and useful exam practice

Available for the 2025/26 academic year

Suitable for GCSE, A Level and university groups.

Sessions are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Meet the researchers:

Dan headshotDan Edmonds

Dan is a researcher working on a project called Inclusive Histories.  Through the project learning resources and case studies are being developed that can be used to teach AQA Power and the People that centre marginalised voices.

Amy headshotAmy Todd

Amy is studying towards a PhD at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on the Women’s Liberation Movement in Britain (1968-1988) and the magazines that were created by women involved in this political movement .

Choose one of the following topics to explore in your session:

1926 General Strike / Miners' Lockout

Examine the important yet often overlooked contribution of women who organised a huge fundraising and solidarity campaign to sustain the strike. The session will also cover the miners of Cramlington who (accidentally!) derailed the Flying Scotsman.

Suitable for GSCE (age 15-16)

1984 to 1985 Miners' Strike

Examine key events in the strike, such as the Battle of Orgreave (1984), and the way that different communities took part, such as Women Against Pit Closures and Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM).

Suitable for GSCE (age 15-16)

1968 to 1988 Women's Liberation Movement (WLM)

Examine the motivations, tensions and key themes of the WLM through the magazines the women created and produced.  They offer a unique insight into the social and political climate of the time through the women’s own words.

Suitable for GCSE / A Level / university (age 15+)
