Oracy & confidence building workshop

Participants work towards writing and delivering a speech on a topic that personally matters to them.

Play with words, find your rhythm and test out techniques to help you with those nerves and leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Memorable speeches have been key to every important reform movement from the chartists and women’s suffrage to trade unions and the fight for disabled people and LGBTQIA+ rights.

Speeches are capable of commanding audiences, communicating information, and even providing a source of entertainment.

This workshop was made possible with Art Fund support.

What can you expect from our workshops?

They run a little differently to traditional ways of teaching.

We promote a shared responsibility for learning, which removes the traditional roles of teacher, facilitator and participant so individuals can become self-reliant and creative thinkers.

What does this look like?

  1. Instilling a ‘try three before me’ mantra promotes problem-solving skills and builds a stronger peer support network
  2. Adults focus on connection not correction. We get curious, ask questions, and encourage risk taking rather than providing answers
  3. We prioritise the process, rather than having a finished piece of work at the end of the session.

Everyone has an important part to play:

The facilitator

  • Share and demonstrate skills
  • Set up activities and provide a path of enquiry
  • Celebrate success and failure equally, because we learn a lot through our mistakes.

Teachers and supporting adults

  • Provide encouragement and give 1-2-1 support where necessary
  • Observe and take note of participants personal progression
  • Ask questions instead of giving answers.

Participants

  • Take risks and test ideas, even if they are unsure if it will work
  • Use and provide peer support to complete tasks
  • Have fun!
