We want a fairer society in which people’s voices and actions make a difference. Will you help us?

We hope that learning about people’s activism at People’s History Museum inspires you to take action on the issues you care about.

Our exhibitions are free to visit and we want to make sure everyone can access them.

We also offer visits to schools and work hard to make sure that our local community benefits too, with events and learning opportunities designed around their needs.

We can only offer all this thanks to people like you, who make donations to support us. If you want to help us do even more, why not join other visitors and make a donation today?

A gift in your will costs you nothing now, but leaves a lasting legacy

Donations in wills provide vital financial support for People’s History Museum and help us to protect the collection for future generations to enjoy; so we are extremely grateful for each and every legacy that we receive.

Anyone can leave a charitable gift in their will.  Making a will gives you the chance to give back to the places, people and ideas you love.

A gift in your will to the museum means you will make a difference for future generations.  You’ll help to ensure the stories are preserved for them to enjoy and be inspired by.

Your gift, no matter the size, will help us to:

  • Continue to offer the museum and all exhibitions as free, for everyone to enjoy
  • Deliver our innovative learning programme to support school aged children to learn about radical ideas and be inspired to act
  • Develop partnerships with individuals and community organisations to ensure that their voices are heard and their stories are told
  • Preserve an object in our national collection for future generations to see
  • Add to our collection and knowledge by funding acquisitions or research
  • Run our building and preserve its heritage for everyone to see.

How to leave a donation in your will

There are different ways that you can leave a gift in your will:

  • A share of your estate – this is a gift of all or part of the value of your estate after debts, other legacies and liabilities are met
  • A specific sum – this is when you choose to leave a chosen amount (also known as a pecuniary gift), which you can arrange to be increased in line with inflation.

You can ask for your legacy to be directed towards your specific areas of interest. Or you can make an unrestricted gift; these are particularly valuable as they enable the museum to use your donation where the need is greatest.

We recommend that you seek independent legal advice if you are thinking of leaving a charitable gift in your will to ensure you have fulfilled the necessary legal requirements.  Further information on accessing legal advice can be found on the Citizens Advice website.

To include us in your new will, or add us to your existing will, your solicitor will need the following details:

Charity name: People’s History Museum, registered as the National Museum of Labour History
Charity number: 295260
Charity address: Left Bank, Spinningfields, Manchester, M3 3ER

There are tax benefits to leaving charitable gifts in your will.  The Gov.uk website has further information on tax relief when you donate to a charity.
