Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) were formed 40 years ago. LGSM were welcomed by the families of the mining communities that they supported, despite vilification by the media which saw LGBT communities as a danger to children and society.
This rhetoric was mainly targeted at lesbians and gay men in the 1980s, and today we see that cycle of vilification turned towards the trans community.

Tomorrow is the last day to apply for Voter ID (Wednesday 26 June at 5.00pm). See our story for accepted forms of ID to vote in the General Election on 4 July.
This poster is from the 1929 General Election, which focused on newly enfranchised women voters. One interpretation of the poster is that the woman is calling out the Conservative and Liberal Party leaders in the background for tipping their hats in an old fashioned manner rather than talking to her directly as a prospective voter, like Labour Party leader Ramsay MacDonald in the foreground (this poster was produced by the Labour Party).
